Market Update: Q1 Review – What We've Seen, What to Watch For

April 10, 2024 10:53 am

This week’s episode offers a look back over a strong first quarter of the year in the markets highlighting some good (stocks) and some not so good (bonds… still!) of the asset classes year-to-date. Beyond the review of what has happened, Jesse & Chris attempt to draw some attention to the positives to hold on to moving forward and raise some signals which may be calling for some prudent caution to manage risks. The guys end, as they try to do, offering a little insight to life away from the stock exchange by sharing what’s been keeping them entertained when away from their computers.

S&P 500: 100 Day Hot Streak

March 28, 2024 12:13 pm

Whether you’re enjoying March Madness, or are anticipating the Masters, most of us have experienced seeing someone on an amazing hot streak in basketball or golf, only to see the hot streak of shots or putts crash and burn before the end of their game or tournament. Having witnessed enough of these things we can grow suspicious of anything that moves positively in one direction for “too long”. Well… with the stock market in a hot streak of it’s own presently – 100+ days without so much as a 2% pullback – Chris and Jesse explore the history of these rare occurrences. TLDR – Historically speaking, it has not only not been bad, it has been rather good!

Direct Indexing: Tax Smart Investment Strategy

March 21, 2024 11:38 am

Random Gleanings this week covers the topic of Direct Indexing as a tax smart investment strategy for dollars invested outside of a specified retirement account (IRA, Roth, 401(k), etc.).

The strategy can be very useful for those seeking:

– Index-like Returns with lower tax liability (to those of an ETF or Mutual Fund index strategy)

– Diversification away from a Concentrated Position (the ownership of an outsized single stock or group of stocks to a more index oriented weighting)

– A tax strategy to help minimize an anticipated large capital gain (selling a long-held business, or real estate investment)

March 7, 2024 10:39 am

Jesse & Chris work to point out some reasons to consider the markets ability to maintain the momentum through the all-time highs and offer some thoughts on how the Fed may be reassessing their strategy in the face of higher and higher asset values.

Corporate Cash: Good for Stocks?

February 21, 2024 1:19 pm

The news of the week will be Nvidia's earnings call. While Jesse & Chris touch on that subject in this week's episode, the majority of the discussion is spent on the challenge of the current environment – the consideration of Strong Earnings & Massive Corporate Cash Hoards against the Continued Challenges of low unemployment and how that all translates potentially to continued inflation. They also investigate the recent correlation between stocks and bonds (moving in tandem) and the challenges that creates for a diversified investor.

NVIDIA crazy stats

February 21, 2024 8:22 am

#NVIDIA has been on a meteoric rise up the stock market lately with some extraordinary gains: they now have a higher market cap than the entire energy sector of the S&P500, they just passed Amazon in market cap to become the 4th largest US company, they are now worth as much as the entire Chinese stock market, they have gained a market cap total equivalent of TESLA in the past two months and they are up the equivalent of one Intel in the last week (as of 02.14.24).
