Why Should I Diversify?

Anytime there has been any persistence of outperformance in an asset class, sector or area of the market, it is natural to ask the question… Why do I own anything else? Why diversify? It’s been often repeated in the dialogue of Random Gleanings or the ink of these write-ups, that historical results are no predictor of future… but there is also the wise Churchillian axiom of “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” While Chris & Jesse remain constructive on the markets and economy, they promote the virtue of diversification in this episode because history suggests that it’s a strategy that serves people well.

Shiny Stuff: Silver & Gold Sparkle, Bonds Struggle

May 31, 2024 1:54 pm

In a quick update this week, Chris Beard & Jesse Hansford run through the year-to-date sparkle of gold and silver, the year-to-date struggle of bonds, and the potentially positive inflection point of international stocks performance against the S&P 500's dominance.

International Stocks: Time to Consider??

May 10, 2024 3:03 pm

It is hard to believe it is already MAY!?!? But as they say, time flies when you’re having fun… and for Chris & Jesse, talking markets keeps the time flying. This week the guys set their focus on International markets – why it’s odd that they have showed strength in the face of a strong US Dollar, where they rate from a “value” standpoint to US stocks, and how stocks outside the US are offering a dividend yield DOUBLE that of the S&P’s here at home.

The episode is not intended to be a recommendation for anyone to dive headfirst into markets around the world, but rather to shine a little light on an area of investment opportunity that has been rather dull for a long time.

Politics & Investing: Friends Don't Let Friends Invest Based on Politics!

May 2, 2024 3:15 pm

This week Random Gleanings takes on the Election! But… if you are looking for Chris or Jesse to tip their hand on who they favor at the polls, you’ll be disappointed. The guys instead work to stick to their lane – MARKETS. The big takeaway??? Presidents may take credit for strong markets, or the media may blame them for poor markets, but markets are overwhelmingly positive across different presidents regardless of political affiliation. Beyond that, you’ll discover some surprising stats on market history during an electoin year.

Tax Planning: Let's Get Started NOW!

April 23, 2024 9:04 am

The episode this week is short and sweet, but includes A MUST DO ACTION ITEM… Let’s Tax Plan! Sure, tax day has just passed, and with that now past thinking more about taxes may be the last thing you want to do. But, Chris Beard & Jesse Hansford encourage that now is the time! Whether it be that you have your newly filed 1040 readily available to share, or the tax bill caused you enough heartache that you’d like to strategize for a potentially better outcome next year, getting started now ensures that the time to execute or distractions of year-end holidays don’t keep you from finding any advantage available to you for 2024 and then getting it done.

With PP&W’s commitment to adding value we made a recent investment into an expert level tax planning tool to increase the efficiency of this sort of review and planning. With this efficiency we are encouraging all clients (and friends/family of clients who aren’t getting this service elsewhere) to share your 2023 tax return to help you find every advantage the tax code offers you to improve your tax outcomes now and/or in the future.

REFLATION: Indicators Showing Inflation on the Rise Again

April 11, 2024 2:58 pm

This week’s episode of Random Gleanings Jesse & Chris tackle topics covering the current Bull Market and reasons it can continue or even why it would be healthy if the continuation comes by way of a rotation in leadership technology to other sectors of the economy. They also discuss the disconnect between news reports of lower inflation doesn’t compute for anyone who needs to buy groceries (ie EVERYONE). The inflation talk leads into a discussion of the possibility/likelihood of a REFLATIONARY regime presenting itself and share some thoughts (not advice) on areas of investment that have tended to do better in such an environment.

Market Update: Q1 Review – What We've Seen, What to Watch For

April 10, 2024 10:53 am

This week’s episode offers a look back over a strong first quarter of the year in the markets highlighting some good (stocks) and some not so good (bonds… still!) of the asset classes year-to-date. Beyond the review of what has happened, Jesse & Chris attempt to draw some attention to the positives to hold on to moving forward and raise some signals which may be calling for some prudent caution to manage risks. The guys end, as they try to do, offering a little insight to life away from the stock exchange by sharing what’s been keeping them entertained when away from their computers.
