Average Pullback During A Bull Market??

August 16, 2024 12:56 pm

Up until the end of July, volatility had been measurably below it's long-term average since November of last year (save a mid-April blip accredited to a reflation scare). Then on Monday, August 5th volatility was measured at the third highest level since it has began being tracked in 1990. That means, the ONLY higher times were in the Great Financial Crisis, and the COVID scare.

The guys speak to the recent volatility, share a helpful chart on the normal intra-year decline across the last 44 years to re-center a long-term investor's focus, and hit on markets in an election year and some recent inflation data.

We hope you'll enjoy, and share… and subscribe to keep up with what's going on in the market and economy!

Why Should I Diversify?

June 20, 2024 4:47 pm

Anytime there has been any persistence of outperformance in an asset class, sector or area of the market, it is natural to ask the question… Why do I own anything else? Why diversify? It’s been often repeated in the dialogue of Random Gleanings or the ink of these write-ups, that historical results are no predictor of future… but there is also the wise Churchillian axiom of “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” While Chris & Jesse remain constructive on the markets and economy, they promote the virtue of diversification in this episode because history suggests that it’s a strategy that serves people well.

May 31, 2024 1:54 pm

In a quick update this week, Chris Beard & Jesse Hansford run through the year-to-date sparkle of gold and silver, the year-to-date struggle of bonds, and the potentially positive inflection point of international stocks performance against the S&P 500's dominance.

International Stocks: Time to Consider??

May 10, 2024 3:03 pm

It is hard to believe it is already MAY!?!? But as they say, time flies when you’re having fun… and for Chris & Jesse, talking markets keeps the time flying. This week the guys set their focus on International markets – why it’s odd that they have showed strength in the face of a strong US Dollar, where they rate from a “value” standpoint to US stocks, and how stocks outside the US are offering a dividend yield DOUBLE that of the S&P’s here at home.

The episode is not intended to be a recommendation for anyone to dive headfirst into markets around the world, but rather to shine a little light on an area of investment opportunity that has been rather dull for a long time.

Politics & Investing: Friends Don't Let Friends Invest Based on Politics!

May 2, 2024 3:15 pm

This week Random Gleanings takes on the Election! But… if you are looking for Chris or Jesse to tip their hand on who they favor at the polls, you’ll be disappointed. The guys instead work to stick to their lane – MARKETS. The big takeaway??? Presidents may take credit for strong markets, or the media may blame them for poor markets, but markets are overwhelmingly positive across different presidents regardless of political affiliation. Beyond that, you’ll discover some surprising stats on market history during an electoin year.
